We took the top twenty newspapers of India and tabulated their readership by language. English comes at fifth place yet linguistic apartheid in India privileges it as the only language of the High Courts and Supreme Court. Obviously newspaper readership is only a sampling of the literate population by language preference. Counting the non-literate would skew the ratio even more against English.
